First this Chimp comforted her dying friend, then she adopted her child

An infant chimp lost his mother the day he was born. Fortunately her mother’s friend does the most amazing thing in the world. First this Chimp comforted her dying friend, then she adopted her child.

The infant was born from a Chimp named Soona. She was 19-years old and the story took place in Monarto Zoo in Australia. It is so sad to hear that the mother of this child died in labor last Friday. She was found the next morning covered in blood by the Zookeepers.

While in labor, Soona had her friend named Zombi as a supporter, and when she gave birth to her child, a male chimp named Gombe, gathered the newborn up and tended to him for a few hours. Zombi stayed with her friend for the last few minutes of her life, and when Soona passed away, Zombi took the newborn and started rearing him as her own.

“I’m humbled by what we’ve seen from the Chimpanzee troop over the last few days,” senior primate keeper Laura Hanley said in a statement. “The unique situation certainly reinforces the strong bond our chimps share and the similarities these amazing creatures have with their closest living relative, us.”

The zookeepers named the little one Boon because they wanted to have a version of his mother’s name still alive. Since Zombi is heavily pregnant the zookeepers are curious to see how is she going to react when her child arrives. “Zombi’s a confident and capable mum, and has the support of an amazing chimp troop,” Hanley explained. “We can’t completely predict the outcome, but know if any chimp can look after two infants at once, Zombi can.”

The zookeepers still need to see how this story will go on, but they will never leave Boon alone. Even if Zombi will be too busy raising her own child in the near future, they doubt that she will not want Boon anymore. She can still raise the two babies as twins, and that would be a win-win situation! These animals are so caring, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. True heroes!
